Scaling of Hunter-Gatherer Camp Size and Human Sociality

چکیده

One of the most common tendencies human settlements is for larger to display higher population densities. Work in urban science and archaeology suggests that this densification pattern reflects an emergent spatial equilibrium where individuals balance movement costs with social interaction benefits, leading increases aggregate productivity interdependence. The temporary camps created by hunters gatherers exhibit a tendency become less dense their size. different manner which hunter-gatherer groups express sociality residential space they typically lack structures material technologies necessary humans live at greater densities permanent settlements. Camp stability predicts patterns of hunter–gatherer cooperation

Humans regularly cooperate with non-kin, which has been theorized to require reciprocity between repeatedly interacting and trusting individuals. However, the role of repeated interactions has not previously been demonstrated in explaining real-world patterns of hunter-gatherer cooperation. Here we explore cooperation among the Agta, a population of Filipino hunter-gatherers, using data from bo...

Hunter-Gatherer Energetics and Human Obesity

Western lifestyles differ markedly from those of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, and these differences in diet and activity level are often implicated in the global obesity pandemic. However, few physiological data for hunter-gatherer populations are available to test these models of obesity. In this study, we used the doubly-labeled water method to measure total daily energy expenditure (kCal/d...

Human Behavior: Sleep in Hunter–Gatherer Societies

How much would we sleep if we lived without the pressures and distractions associated with industrialized lifestyles? New research shows that hunter-gatherer societies sleep for 6-7 hours a night--a level similar to industrialized societies.

Settlement-Size Scaling among Prehistoric Hunter-Gatherer Settlement Systems in the New World

Settlement size predicts extreme variation in the rates and magnitudes of many social and ecological processes in human societies. Yet, the factors that drive human settlement-size variation remain poorly understood. Size variation among economically integrated settlements tends to be heavy tailed such that the smallest settlements are extremely common and the largest settlements extremely larg...

Supposing Hunter-gatherer Variability

J B. S. Haldane, the British geneticist, once mused, "my suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose ,but queerer than we can suppose" (Haldane 1927:286). This comment can be paraphrased to summarize the fundamental problem presently facing hunter-gatherer studies: there is more variation among recent and especially past hunter-gatherer societies than we have supposed. Th...
